The City and Tourism Industry lure in tourists with antebellum scenes and whiffs of plantation life. But Humane treatment of these animals? Hmmmm…let the conditions speak for themselves.

Horses and mules in Charleston pull wagon-loads of tourists typically for 8 hours a day. Using CDC figures we estimate that the SEVENTEEN (17) adults in those wagons, plus heavy harnesses and the wagon itself weigh about 2 1/2 TONS. That’s 2 1/2 TONS EVERY HOUR. ALL DAY.

What about rest and water during these long work hours for the animals? 15 minutes (the time it takes to unload and RE-load tourists).

Heat Regs? Talk about turning a callous eye to animal welfare….the City allows the Industry to work these animals up to a searing 95 degrees measured FOUR TIMES above a hotel before these animals are allowed off the streets. The most extreme in the US.
We could tell you more. It doesn’t get better.
SO…how is your money spent?
These animals are at your mercy for telling their stories. We put your donations to use giving them a voice. What we don’t spend your money on is a staff or an office.
Banners, bumper stickers and flyers. Postcards and booths at public events. Social media posts. Volunteers out on the streets handing flyers with the truth about the working and living conditions of these animals. Holding rallies. Speaking before the City Council. That’s where your dollars go.
