2021 turned out to be a busy year for Charleston Carriage Horse Advocates. While the pandemic raged, tourism continued to line the pockets of the carriage wagon industry. A carriage horse died as a result of his half-hitched wagon striking his leg causing a fatal injury and multiple incidents involving carriage horses, mules and unsuspecting tourists continued.
Tis the season for giving and lots of worthy groups are contacting you right now. As you ponder, we ask you to consider helping overworked carriage horses and mules in Charleston.
It is the right and duty of citizens and their organizations to offer measures that provide for the safety of our children, citizens, visitors and the animals that pull the wagons.
As is documented by police and Tourism department records since 2016 there have been over 120 carriage-related incidents. Drivers thrown off, children injured, property damage, equipment failure.
The big question: was answered last evening at Tourism Commission. Tourism members, the majority of whom have financial interests in the tourism industry, voted to turn their backs on real common-sense safety reforms
Window dressing or real safety reforms? Tourism Commission will decide the fate of the Safety Ordinance for Carriages.
According to Channel 5 News, Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said investigators interviewed witnesses and those involved in the June 19 carriage incident. They also reviewed video footage, he said. That the wagon was involved in a hit and run by a tractor-trailer was the original explanation in the incident report. But video footage and witness statements revealed a very different story. There was no collision
